What are scouts looking for? Scouts are looking for players with major league tools, solid makeup, and baseball instincts.
What are the tools? Tools are the skills necessarry to play at the major league level. Position players are graded on hitting ability, power, running speed, fielding ability, and arm strength. Pitchers are graded on fastball velocity, movement, command, and control, secondary pitches, delivery, arm action, and other intangibles.
How do you get seen by a professional scout or college coach? You may get seen at one of your games, but most likely a showcase ran by major league scouts, a top event such as the Area Code Games, or by a recommendation from a reputable source.
Do you have a better chance of getting drafted if you attend a top Division 1 program? You probably will have a better chance to get seen at a large school because scouts frequent those school more often, however, if you have ability it does not matter if you play Division 1 or Division 111. The major leagues are made up of the best players coming from lots of different backgrounds. Find a school with solid academics and a coach that wants you to play for him is my best advice.
What percentage of players drafted play in the Major Leagues? About 10% of players drafted ever play one game at the major league level.
If I throw 90 mph will I be drafted? The magic 90 mph velocity is just a starting point, it is an average fastball, size, delivery, arm action, command, and secondary stuff plus intangables all figure into the equation.
Do scouts get bonuses when a player they draft reaches the big leagues? No, scouts are under contract. If you perform well you may get a contract extention or an offer from another team.
What is makeup? Makeup is the personality and character of a player. Makeup is both on the field and off.
